As we joyfully celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, we remember that Jesus, born in Bethlehem, is revealed to all of us. His light shines on the rich and the poor, kings and shepherds, the wise and the foolish, saints and sinners. This feast is a beautiful testament to God’s desire to reveal Himself to each of us, fostering a personal relationship rooted in His boundless love that has come into the world.

In this season of giving, we invite you to reflect on the words of 2 Corinthians 9:7: "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." As members of our faith community, your generous contributions are vital in supporting the mission and activities of our parish. By making a charitable donation before December 31st, you not only help us bridge the gaps in our budget but also have the opportunity to reduce your annual tax bill. Please consult your tax advisor for guidance. To ensure your donation is properly documented, we encourage you to use your monthly envelopes, allowing us to provide you with a receipt if needed. Your support is a testament to your faith and commitment to our shared spiritual journey. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Las Posadas also teaches us about hospitality. As we know, Mary was about to give birth to Jesus, but she and Joseph could not find a place to spend the night. No one would welcome them into their house, and there was no place for them in the local inns. This taught us to feel how they must have felt when no one opened the door to them. This still happens today: there are many people in desperate need to leave their country of origin who are not welcomed in a country that is not theirs. They are fleeing violence, poverty, and danger and trying to find a new life in another country, but the doors are shut in their faces; they are forgotten, marginalized, and treated with disrespect. They are stripped of their dignity, often forced to do jobs that no one else wants to do for much less money than they deserve. Just like the Holy Family needed help 2,000 years ago, there are people today who need our help and we need to open the doors of our hearts and let them in. There are people in our society who need our charity and our hospitality to have a better life.

Corpus Christi is Latin for the “Body of Christ.” In the Catholic Church in the West, Corpus Christi is celebrated as a solemnity on the Sunday following the Most Holy Trinity Sunday since the liturgical reforms of Vatican II. At its core the solemnity is a celebration of the Tradition and belief in the Eucharist as the Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. For millennia, such a theme was part of the celebration of Holy Thursday, but then there are other important themes that are part of that celebration. And, all this occurs in the shadow of Good Friday. The placement of the celebration is not one that necessarily lends itself to a joyful celebration. But looked at from another perspective, every Sunday is a feast of the Eucharist, because by participating in the Mass, and in receiving Communion, we are honoring and celebrating the Eucharist. Still, the Feast of Corpus Christi has its own history.

Trinity Sunday celebrates the Church’s faith in the triune God, one God in three persons. This doctrine has baffled people for 2,000 years. Given that it is so hard to accept, why bother with it? What difference does the trinitarian dogma really make to how we live our Christian lives? To listen to this post read by the author, click the play icon below.
